For those who tend toward outdoor pursuits ghillie suits are often the garments that are considered to be ‘must have’ items. This type of clothing is also identified as a camo-tent and some people even call them ‘yowie suits.

Regardless of what name you may give a ghillie suit there is no denying that this particular garment has struck a common chord with consumers who enjoy pursuing activities such as camping, hunting and fishing.

Ghillie suits are specifically designed garments that act as camouflage. With a ghillie suit the overall effect makes the wearer blend into a forested landscape. The patterns and materials used to create ghillie suits produce a piece of camo clothing with a strong resemblance to dense woodland foliage.

When you discover a ghillie suit for sale you will immediately notice that the outfit is constructed to be a covering that appears to look like a great deal of netting. This results from the combination of strings, twine or loosely woven cloth strips that are used as fabrics.

The overall effect causes the ghillie suit to resemble a covering that consists of twigs, branches and leaves. Some individuals add to this camouflaged appearance by incorporating natural foliage into the outer surface of the garment.  

The idea behind all ghillie suits is to make it possible for outdoorsmen to effortlessly conceal themselves in any wooded area. This type of camouflage protection keeps individuals safely out of sight while they are able to observe the activity around them. This camouflage is essential for any serious hunter or sniper.

With ghillie suits delivering the necessary cover the wearer is able to assume a more 3D silhouette while maintaining an almost invisible profile. The higher quality ghillie suits are constructed so that they are able to shift, move and flow if the wind is blowing. This adds to the realistic camo cover that a ghillie suit is providing.

Originally these outdoor garments were used in Scotland by members of a British Army regiment. The soldiers were aware that the ‘ghillie’ had been invented by Highland gamekeepers and used as a blind by hunters. However the members of the British regiment were also able to see the potential that these suits offered. The soldiers transformed the camouflage garments into elaborate, portable covering that could be utilized by their best snipers.

The name ‘yowie’ was adopted from the Australians. Some of the Aussie snipers christened these suits with this particular name because the garments made the wearers appear to resemble the legendary Yowie . The Yowie is the Australian equivalent of the American Bigfoot or the Himalayan Yeti.
